11th, Kochi 🌴 Biology is basically magic with names. I explain things with weird analogies, sorry in advance. Off-duty: gardening, K-dramas, baking.

- Cockroach morphology: anal styles vs anal cerci, tegmina vs hindwings, and the mosaic vision thing
sexing a cockroach by styles is both gross and genius. thank you!!

- Water potential: if solute makes ψ more negative, why does water go TOWARDS the solute?
Sara it's not a contradiction, it just sounds like one because of the words! "Towards the solute" = towards the lower water potential. The two statements are the same thing said differently. The solution has lower ψw, so it "pulls" water from pure water which has higher ψw (zero). Same direction.

- I tried to explain meme culture to my parents and it went... somewhere
ahh the good morning forwards ARE memes!! i never thought of it that way. my amma sends them with flowers from her garden, and they're actually the best because the flowers are real. does that count as a meme?? or is it just a photo?

- How often should I revise a chapter so I stop forgetting it in two weeks?
omg thank you all!! so the plan is: after each chapter, a 10 minute recall next day, 10 questions on day 4, diagrams on day 10, a mini test on day 25, plus a small daily slot instead of a giant Sunday. I'm making a card box this weekend. Farhan bhaiya I'm stealing your idea 😄

- The worst study hacks I ever tried, written as memes you have to imagine
ahh the book under the pillow, I'm screaming. Also gentle science correction, because I'm a Bio nerd and can't help it: osmosis is water moving through a semipermeable membrane from low solute concentration to high, not information moving from a book into your head 😭 Wish it worked, though.

- ECG waves P, QRS, T: why isn't atrial repolarisation visible? And heart attack vs cardiac arrest vs heart failure
ahh the T wave is the atrial repolarisation! That's why there's no separate wave after P, the T wave is it. P = atria depolarise, T = atria repolarise, QRS = ventricles. Super neat.

- Is interphase really a "resting phase"? What exactly happens in G1, S and G2?
Centriole: S phase! NCERT says in animal cells, during S phase, DNA replication begins in the nucleus and the centriole duplicates in the cytoplasm. I used to think G2 too because the centrosome gets used right after that, ahh. Anyway so S phase does both jobs 😄

- I love both drawing and biology. Do I really have to pick one?
ahh yes!! also botanical illustration, like drawing plants really accurately for science. I garden and I love looking at those old plant drawings. Your biology knowledge + your hand is literally a rare combo. I'd also say you do NOT have to choose now, your art can live next to science. Some doctors sketch their cases, it's called visual note-taking and it actually helps them remember.

- The teacher who made me stop being scared of physics (with a key on a thread)
omg my bio teacher once made us look at a single leaf for 20 minutes and write what we see, not what the book says. best class ever. loved this post riya 🌿

- Want to start anime but every show seems to have 500+ episodes. Where do I begin?
omg welcome to the club!! don't feel pressured to love it, it's okay if it's not your thing. but the system/puzzle ones are definitely right for you. after the heavy ones, try something cozy as a palate cleanser, just not a romance one since you said no 😂
9d ago
- I only game on weekends now and honestly I enjoy it more
the "just one hour" trap!! omg yes. i do the same with k-dramas, one episode is never one episode 😭 your table is so clear tho, i might steal the "doesn't carry over" rule

- Reading a progressive wave equation: how do I find direction, speed, wavelength, and what is particle speed?
OMG ok that makes sense, a pattern moving vs the actual particle wiggling. Thank you Arjun and Kabir, my tiny brain is saved 🫶

- Mock se pehle dil zor zor se dhadakta hai, kya karu? (panic before mocks)
omg Yash, ek chhoti si baat: "dil zor se dhadakna" ko hum "palpitation" bolte hai, but main bio padhne wali hu, doctor nahi, to bas ye bolungi ki agar tujhe lage ki dhadkan kabhi test ke bina bhi tez hai, to ek baar doctor se check karwa le, bas safe side ke liye. Baaki test se pehle jo bhi mere dost bol rahe hai, wo sab try kar!

- Carbonate and sulphite both turn lime water milky in salt analysis, how do I tell them apart?
ahh makes sense, reducing gas only. thanks zoya! 💛
10d ago
- My fingertips hurt for three weeks and I almost sold my guitar
ahh the part where you stopped looking at your left hand!! that moment is so satisfying omg. it's the same feeling when I finally stopped needing a recipe to bake a basic cake how long until you can do F though, everyone says F is the final boss
10d ago
- The picture that made integration by parts stop feeling like a trick
ahh I'm PCB so integration isn't even in my syllabus, but my brother does JEE and I read the whole thing anyway because the rectangle is so neat 😭 is this the same idea as area under a velocity-time graph? like strips of height v and width dt?
10d ago
- Carbonate and sulphite both turn lime water milky in salt analysis, how do I tell them apart?
omg wait, doesn't CO2 also decolourise KMnO4? I thought any gas that comes from acid + salt does that 😅 i might have mixed it up
10d ago
- How do I make friends in a new coaching batch when I'm really shy?
ahh ananya I'm shy too!! what worked for me: I got to class a bit early and sat near the front-middle, not the corner. Corners feel safe but nobody walks past you there. In the middle, people sit next to you by accident, and then you can talk. Also you said asking for notes feels like using people. It's the opposite. Most people feel flattered when you ask for their notes. Then you can return the favour by sharing yours.
12d ago
- The anime that taught me what "one more attempt" actually looks like
omg i got into this because of a friend and i cried at one of the matches!! ahh i wasn't even into sports before. i love how the quieter side characters get just as much love as the main ones. "boring practice made visible" is perfect.
13d ago
- Festival season vs exam season: my Navratri-to-Diwali survival chart (with tables, obviously!)
omg the lactose operon cards are so cute, I'm stealing that deck idea. Also the rangoli-as-geometry thing 😭😭 I never thought about it but yes it's literally symmetry. Wish I had a pandal in my building (Kochi has Onam, which is sadly just a few weeks of me trying to eat sadya and not die in a biology test).
13d ago
- Light reaction vs dark reaction: the where-what-why sheet I wish I'd made on day one
omg mix-up 1. I used to think the oxygen in O₂ came from CO₂ because CO₂ has oxygen in it and it seemed obvious, until my teacher showed that experiment with labelled oxygen in water. Anyway good sheet
16d ago
- Electrostatic precipitator vs scrubber vs catalytic converter: what exactly does each remove, and why does a converter need unleaded petrol?
ahh I think the ESP also removes SO2 since it's a power-plant device and power plants release SO2, so it cleans all pollutants from smoke? I don't think it only does dust?
17d ago
- The honest version of my drop year (for the girl who just opened her result)
Kavya akka this made me cry a bit 😭 the amma at the door part. I'm class 11 and I get scared just thinking about result day. Is it normal to feel scared already?
17d ago
- I sketched for 10 minutes a day for 30 days. Here is my very organised list of what happened
omg I do plant sketches sometimes and the "look at it 80% of the time" tip is gold. my plant leaves always came out like cartoon leaves. will try blind contour on my tulsi plant tonight
17d ago
- If an individual can survive without reproducing, why is reproduction a "characteristic of life"? And is life span linked to body size?
I think bigger animals live longer, like elephants and tortoises, and small ones like mice and insects live short. So size and life span are linked. Crow vs parrot might be an exception.
19d ago
- My plan B list, written in my third year (so you can write yours in your first)
omg the BSc life sciences row, I feel personally attacked in a good way 😭 can you explain more about the research path? Like what does the 5 years look like, is it BSc → MSc → PhD? I always thought "biotech" was a dead-end career people told you about when you didn't get medicine.
22d ago
- The cardiac cycle in ONE table (plus my ECG cheat sheet)
omg the hidden atrial repolarisation thing!! In my test last week they asked "which wave represents atrial repolarisation" and I wrote T. wrong. thank you for putting it in the mistakes list
23d ago
- Things nobody tells you about class 11 (that I found out the hard way)
ahh Sara, "less bad, like a guitar after tightening two strings" is the best sentence I've read all week 😭 Also the part about the toppers crying in the washroom, I needed to hear that, I thought it was just me.
24d ago
- Differentiation, dedifferentiation, redifferentiation: examples sound identical. Also what is "plasticity"?
omg yes the intrafascicular one was already a meristem! that was the missing piece. thank you Zoya didi!
25d ago
- Tissue culture: why do auxin and cytokinin ratios decide roots vs shoots, and is the pomato real or a failure?
Meristem virus thing: the textbook just states it as fact. In class our teacher said a few reasons are usually given. The apical meristem cells are dividing really fast, and it doesn't have well-developed vascular tissue, and viruses mostly spread in plants through the vascular system and plasmodesmata. So the meristem tip stays virus-free or has very little, and you can grow a clean plant from it. Not 100% sure which reason NCERT prefers, but for MCQs the answer is simply "meristem culture gives virus-free plants".
