How I made about ₹8,000 in four months without wrecking my prep (tutoring, a logo, a tiny script)

Notes from a JEE repeater who has too many opinions about hourly rates.

Quick disclaimer: I'm a JEE repeater, I'm not a business guru, and the amount here is small. If you want "how I made lakhs at 17", this is the wrong post. This is for the person who needs some pocket money, wants to feel less useless, and doesn't want to destroy their preparation. That was me this summer.

Total in four months: ₹8,100. Total hours: about 40. So roughly ₹200 an hour. Let me show you where it came from, because the breakdown is the useful bit.

The rules before the work

I wrote three rules on a sticky note before I did anything.

  1. Max five hours a week, and weekends only. Weekdays are for prep. Always.
  2. Nothing in the 30 days before a big mock series. I'd love to say I'm disciplined. Truth: I once spent a Saturday fixing a spreadsheet for a stranger and failed my Sunday test. Never again.
  3. The money goes in an envelope. Not "my money for random stuff". It's for a specific list: a secondhand book, a proper chair, and my sister's birthday gift.

The third rule matters more than it looks. When money has a job, you stop working for it once the job is done.

Gig 1: tutoring (₹5,600)

A neighbour's son, class 8. Maths and some science. Two hours a week at ₹200 an hour at their house, with the parent in the next room. I did 14 paid weeks (two were skipped, one for a festival, one because he had fever). 14 weeks × 2 hours × ₹200 = ₹5,600.

What I learned:

  • Teaching is a really good revision. I'm not saying this to make the post sound wise. Explaining fractions to a class 8 kid made me notice I had been fuzzy about why we do cross multiplication.
  • The first week I charged nothing as a trial, then asked the parents what they thought. It helped because they had a say.
  • Be clear about your age. I told them I was 18 and preparing for an exam. Nobody cared. They cared about the kid improving.
  • Fix the schedule. "Whenever you are free" is a lie that ends with you being free when you shouldn't be.

Gig 2: a logo (₹1,500)

A friend's uncle runs a small tailoring shop and wanted a signboard. I used a free design tool, tried five versions, and took about seven hours over two weekends, which is where I messed up: I quoted too low, thinking I was being kind. ₹1,500 / 7 hours is about ₹215 an hour, fine, but I forgot the time they spent changing their mind. Next time I'll say "two rounds of changes included, after that it's ₹300 more."

Gig 3: a tiny script (₹1,000)

The same uncle writes daily sales in a notebook and adds them on a calculator every night. I made a sheet where he types item, quantity and price into a file, and a ten-line program that gives him total per item and the day's total. It took me about five hours including fixing his first file (he typed "Rs." in the price column and my script died).

Here's the whole thing. Nothing fancy.

import csv
from collections import defaultdict

totals = defaultdict(int)

with open("sales.csv") as f:
    for row in csv.DictReader(f):
        totals[row["item"]] += int(row["qty"]) * int(row["price"])

for item, amount in sorted(totals.items(), key=lambda x: -x[1]):
    print(f"{item:<15} ₹{amount}")

print("Total:", sum(totals.values()))

Lesson: the code was the easy part. The hard part was teaching him to type numbers without "Rs." in front, and making a double-click file so he doesn't open a terminal. Real clients don't want code, they want the problem gone.

Watch out for these

There is a lot of junk for teens who want money online, and some of it is dangerous.

  • Anyone who asks you to pay first to "unlock" work, a kit, a registration, a training. That is how it works: the only person earning is them.
  • "Typing jobs", "task jobs", "like and earn". I won't link anything, but if the money is quick and the work is silly, it is a trap.
  • Strangers who want your Aadhaar, bank details or OTP for "verification". No job needs your OTP. Ever.
  • Meeting a stranger alone to tutor. Tutor at home with a parent nearby, or online with a parent around. Same for design clients: public place or video call.

My dad's rule: if I can't explain the work to him in two sentences, I don't take it.

What it cost me

Honesty time. In June, when I added a second tutoring kid for two weeks, my test accuracy dropped. I didn't see it for ten days. I dropped the second kid and the numbers came back. So five hours is a ceiling, not a target.

And it changed something small in my head. I realised my hour has a price. Not just in rupees. When I waste a Sunday scrolling I now think: that was worth ₹200 and also a chapter of electrostatics.

If you want to start

Pick one thing you already do reasonably well, find one real person who needs it, charge something (even small), put a time limit, and keep the money visible. Skip the fancy portfolio. Start with the neighbour.

    Respect for the script. Tiny thing: you can do the same in 3 lines with pandas groupby, but then your uncle has to install pandas, so your version is better. Real clients want a double-click file, I learned this the hard way when I built a small app for my cousin's shop and he ran it by opening it in a text editor 😂

      exactly, the stdlib version is slow to write but dumb-proof. And "opened in text editor" is relatable, my uncle opened the csv in notepad and then said "the numbers are all stuck together".

    I'm class 11, can I even do this? My parents will say no. Also if I tutor 3 hours a week at ₹250 an hour how much would that be a month? I want to see if it's worth the effort.

    • [+]Kabir Joshi11thSample· 1mo ago

      250 × 3 = 750 a week, × 4 = 3,200 a month

      • [+]Arjun Nair12thSample· 1mo ago

        750 × 4 is 3,000, not 3,200. You can get to roughly 3,200 if you count 4.3 weeks in a month but then say so. And holidays/exams eat some weeks anyway, so budget ₹3,000 at best. Ananya, more useful than the number: that's 12 hours of class 11 life per month. Decide if 12 hours are worth ₹3,000 to you right now.

          yep my bad, 3,000. I was thinking in months of 4.3 weeks and then forgot to say it. fixed.

    In Patna tutoring for class 8-9 is ₹100-150 an hour, so your ₹200 is high for my area. But I like the rule of five hours. I did tutoring last year and my marks fell. Now I only do two hours on Sunday.

    Solid, and you already saw the main thing: price your time not your task. One small push: for the logo, charge per round of changes, not per project. Fixed price + unlimited changes is how freelancers lose their weekends. Also separate the "problem solved" value from the hours. A script that saves his evenings might be worth way more than ₹1,000 to him.

    • [+]Tushar PawarDropperSample· 1mo agoAuthor

      true, and I think I undersold the script. next time I'll show him how many minutes he saves every night before I name a price

    the most JEE sentence of 2026: "I realised my hour has a price, also a chapter of electrostatics" 😭

    I appreciated the part where you stopped when your accuracy dropped. A lot of teenagers keep going with a side job because the money feels like proof that they are doing something useful, and then quietly pay for it with sleep. What you wrote about money having a job, so you stop when the job is done, is a calm way to do this. Did your parents have an opinion in the beginning?

    • [+]Tushar PawarDropperSample· 1mo agoAuthor

      Papa said "do it, but only if your mock average doesn't go down", which is basically a contract. Mummy said "wear a proper shirt for the tutoring" 😅

    I wrote product descriptions for a friend's small online shop for ₹300 once. Writing isn't an obvious side job but if you like it, you can try it too. The pay is tiny but the byline feels nice.
