Bhai, kisi non-reader ko pehli book kaunsi deni chahiye? (honest answers please)

Okay scene ye hai. Main aaj tak sirf textbooks aur ek-do comics padha hoon. School ke reading period mein bhi main chupke se phone chalata tha. Ab class 11 mein aake lag raha hai ki book padhni chahiye, kyunki meera didi aur baaki log itna bolte hain, aur mera English bhi thoda kamzor hai.

Maine try kiya: ek famous self-help type book download ki thi (kisi ne bola "must read"), 12 pages ke baad band kar di. Boring tha bhai, aise lag raha tha jaise teacher lecture de rahe hon. Phir ek mota novel utha ke dekha, 3 din mein sirf 40 pages ho paye, aur main khud ko useless feel kar raha tha.

Ab kya karun? Mujhe kuch aisa chahiye jo:

  • 150-200 pages se zyada na ho
  • English ya Hindi dono chalega
  • boring na ho, filmi type ho toh aur achha
  • finish karne ke baad lage ki "arre maine ek book khatam kar li"

Aap logon ne apni pehli real book kaunsi padhi thi? Aur agar kuch padhna chhod do toh guilt hona chahiye ya nahi? Bata do yaar, genuinely help chahiye.

Yash, your instincts are right: abandon books that bore you. My suggestion is The Blue Umbrella, about sixty pages, quick to finish and quite funny in places. Second: any short story collection, because each story is a complete win by itself. And yes, you can stop a book without guilt. Give it fifty pages, and if it still doesn't pull you in, put it down. The "I finished a book" feeling comes quicker with something thin.

read Wings of Fire, its a short novel and every indian kid reads it at some point. easy english, inspiring af. also dont feel bad about the thick novel bro, that one is basically a final boss

A small correction, Rohan: Wings of Fire is an autobiography, not a novel. It's readable and the English is simple, but it's non-fiction, and the early parts can feel slow if you're hoping for plot. Fine as a second book. For a first one, I'd choose fiction with a story that pulls you along.

oh true my bad, autobiography πŸ˜… still a good one tho, just not "filmi"

if you want "filmi", go for a thriller. And Then There Were None is a little over your page limit but it is nearly impossible to put down, every chapter ends with a "wait, WHAT". Easy language too. If it's too long, try a short mystery collection first. Also: skip anything labelled "must read". That label is a red flag.

bhai thriller toh main series mein dekh leta hoon, book mein bhi same feel aayegi kya?

      • [+]Nisha Verma12thSampleΒ· 25d ago

Not the same, but different in a good way: in a book you're running the "movie" in your own head, it's slower, and you notice things you'd miss on screen. Try a chapter and see. If you read two chapters and don't care about the characters, switch.

Hindi mein try karo, Premchand ki chhoti kahaniyan, jaise "Idgah". Short hain, ek baithak mein khatam, aur dil pe lagti hain. Mujhe school mein lagta tha boring hongi, par bade hokar padhi toh bahut alag lagi.

comics and graphic novels count. don't be a snob about it, the people who say it doesn't are usually the ones who've never finished anything hard. a story is a story. start with pictures if that makes the first book easier, then slowly add more words.

Yash, the first book matters less than the rule that lets you quit. My rule: give it thirty pages, and if you're dreading opening it, replace it. Dread is the only real signal. And finish one small thing, anything, this month. Once you've done it, the second one is easier.
